A statue of hope admist destruction

Slightly more than a week ago, Japan was struck by an earthquake and the people were caught off guard by the tsunami which left a trail of  devastation in its wake. I guess there is no need to describe the extent of the damage, but if I were to describe everything in one word, that word would most likely be pandemonium. Nevertheless, some miracles are born out of tragedies, and here is one story…

Standing in the midst of rubble and debris of the city of Ishinomaki in Miyagi is the statue of Kamen Rider, unscathed after being hit by a 10m tall tsunami. Ishinomaki is home to Kamen Rider, and also lies in one of the badly hit areas. Kamen Rider proves once and again that he will not be defeated any obstacles, and the statue is now a symbol of hope and courage to the disoriented disaster victims.

Many miracles had unfolded since the calamity, and I think it is really heartwarming to hear such astonishing tales in a crisis. In a place where hope and dream had been vanquished by misfortune, it is easy to lose sight of our aims and goals. The road to recovery is and uphill battle, the amount of work that needs to be put into place seems daunting, and despair over losses will all stall our progress. Indeed it is easy to be overcome by pessimism in such dark time over in Japan. Such tales help to renew everyone’s fighting spirit, and push them to strive for a better outcome. I hope, as rescue efforts redoubles, more of such stories will emerge that will empower both the victims and rescuers. May this flicker of light in darkness ignite many more candles which spread warmth, hope and power to those who hear it, and may it spread on to unite everybody to once again rebuild the former glory of Japan.
